Dr. Lucinda Gray, Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist
About Me
I have been a California licensed psychologist for more than 25 years. Now I practice in California and in Costa Rica. I specialize in Transformational Counseling, especially in guiding people through major life change, with Focusing Oriented Psychotherapy, Focusing Training for clients and therapists, and psychotherapy consultation and supervision. I also teach Fast Track Meditation, a method of meditation that makes it easier to establish a regular meditation practice. I work with groups, couples, and individuals.

I received my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in 1977, and was licensed in 1979 (lic. # PSY5969). In graduate school I trained in traditional psychoanalytic methods and Jungian psychology as well as newer adaptations of Freud’s’ work, such as Self Psychology and Object Relations. I chose Client Centered Therapy as my primary specialty area.

The Client Centered tradition appeals to me because of the special way it honors your personal expertise in guiding your own life, rather than relying on the advice of experts. This Client Centered philosophy teaches that the wisdom you long for is within you, and the work of the counselor is to help you discover it for yourself. Focusing comes out of this philosophical tradition. I trained in Focusing with Eugene Gendlin, Ph.D. and I am now a Coordinator in the International Focusing Network. This network is a world wide group of practitioners, teachers and therapists who use Focusing in their personal as well as professional lives, as a major tool for self healing and helping others. Over the years, my practice has evolved and now includes EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a new trauma treatment that can be used with Focusing. Along my path I studied many different disciplines including body oriented methods of healing, such as Yoga, and Integrative Body Psychotherapy.

Meditation has always fascinated me, so I have studied and practiced Eastern meditative traditions, especially Tibetan Buddhist methods, for the past 30 years. I practice advanced Tibetan Buddhist visualization methods for the cultivation of peace, insight and benign compassion. Now I have developed a new advanced meditation method, more suited to westerners, which I call Fast Track Meditation. It is faster and easier to learn than traditional meditation practices and it provides a path to emotional healing as well as the benefits of more traditional practices.

My Approach to Transformation and Healing
I will work with you as the unique person you are. As we spend time together in session and explore your experience of your life issues, I will think about your situation and create a custom designed program especially for you. I will adapt the many techniques I have learned over the years and use the ones that suit your unique process and your needs.

I believe that no lasting change can happen without a bodily felt experience of difference. Just talking about it isn’t enough. Therefore most sessions will include an experiential component designed to help you find the path to your own inner knowing. My job as your therapist is to help you find your own answers within yourself. Everything you need to know is already there, inside. Together we will work toward discovering the right action steps that reflect your own true nature and meet your unique needs.
